Vince Gilligan Reveals He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
The acclaimed writer-producer never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
With the first season of the hit sci-fi show reaching its finale—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the storyline of Pluribus.
About the Tremendous Viewer Reception
One could easily to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and audience predictions about Pluribus. He is doing his best to avoid both.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Know the Ending of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Of course, why mess with the classics?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
