Ultra-Conservative Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's New President.

After a definitive final ballot, hardline politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.

A Clear-Cut Triumph

With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Agenda Focused On Law and Order and Migration

Recognized for his staunch Catholic views and regard for the era of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was mostly focused on promises to address increasing insecurity and drastically curb immigration.

He repeatedly pointed to foreigners, notably the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. Throughout the election cycle, he gave an final demand for them to depart before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His plans included controversial measures such as erecting detention centers, barriers, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northern border.

Within a Broader Shift

Numerous observers view Kast's victory as fitting into a larger conservative wave in the region, following recent electoral results in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other experts also frame it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Solid Majority

Despite his decisive electoral victory, Kast does not have an clear majority in parliament, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are combined together.

This legislative situation may challenge his policy goals, including a vow to slash public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a measure for which he has yet to provided a clear explanation.

"There are many things about how a Kast administration will operate that we don't know because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political analyst.

The expert stated, "Regarding fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies typical of the right. However where there is much less uncertainty is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
