Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion Provided The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism Outside.

A single omission did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory will likely need contributions by Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the strategic frameworks and player rankings necessary with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is a matter of harnessing it in the right way. Individual quality is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after not being selected of last month’s squad. He watched England book their place at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a counterpressing No 10. He heard the coach mention valuing the group’s energy and values. Naturally, he has reacted in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to starting a conflict with an elite performer in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time not playing has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel stated. “Jude displays a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. We all must support him and build a setting where he can use that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and Albania. Any other news? Well, what about Phil Foden? Here is a further gifted playmaker who needs love and guidance. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to reach his best this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after how he played in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The question, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be compelling reasons to select another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the tournament be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel repeating that if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with speedy wingers on the wings. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. There will also be no position on the wing for the City star, who has to be central. The coach wants him near the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed in the team but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Or the right wing?” he stated. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I have this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are occasions when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly something is not right, whether it's his role, the setup, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he profits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

The manager talked about Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at deploying Foden as a false 9 versus one opponent or Albania. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that one must look back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in an international match against Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other once during England’s draws with Denmark and another at the European Championship. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be observing him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an more effective one.
