The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, though other scenes show the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic involves managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
