Keith Baker and Keith Baker Are Teaching Sessions at DMU
Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting immersive events where professional dungeon masters lead Dungeons & Dragons games in old manors in Britain and at a U.S. castle resort. The full-service getaways are widely appreciated among forever DMs who infrequently find the moment to actually play themselves, and they often seek advice from experts on topics ranging from improv and creating challenges to managing conflicts at the table.
In response, the coordinators began crafting a systematic approach to address these questions, which led to the creation of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is set for early January 2026 at Oglethorpe University.
“There are numerous digital guides on virtually any subject and acquire valuable insights, but the philosophy was that nothing compares to a live, hands-on session alongside fellow DMs, where there’s live engagement with faculty instructors and your peers who are probably in the same boat and also want to enhance their abilities,” stated the program's dean.
Workshop Options and Pricing Tiers
Dungeon Masters can choose from packages ranging from just under $1,000 to $2.5K, according to the degree of interaction they desire with the professionals. The entry-level option includes selection from four classes:
- Skill Building: Focuses on the essentials of running D&D.
- Long-Term Game Planning: Focuses around building persistent adventures.
- Worldbuilding: Concentrates on the crafting of environments.
- Industry Advancement: Tailored to DMs who seek to understand more about the tabletop profession.
Each course includes multiple sessions of instruction spread over 48 hours.
“The classes are designed so that you walk away with tangible results, increased self-assurance, and many practical techniques,” Carl explained. “It's more than presentations and they go beyond recorded content. These classes that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then head back to your table the week after and put into practice in your local game.”
Seasoned Educators
Many sessions are led by a pair of experts. Worldbuilding is led by the founder of Monte Cook Games and the creator of Eberron, jointly leading the art of worldbuilding.
Professional development features multiple instructors, such as an author on gaming puzzles, Clint McElroy, and an early professional game master. The additional faculty is meant to offer targeted guidance to students with definite objectives.
“Some of them plan to create their own live gameplay show and display their adventures with the world, some of them aim to release and create new material,” Carl explained. “Several only seek to ask, What does it take to be a DM at a program like an immersive experience? Which abilities that I need? Can anyone do it?”
Higher Tiers
A $1,500 gold tier provides access to a opening gathering, a introductory package, and a brief one-on-one appointment with an instructor. This marks the debut of the program, though the team has previously run similar events during breaks between game sessions at their premium gatherings.
“One could practically host an complete event just on office hours for professional dungeon masters,” Carl mentioned. “I don’t know if that’s the most effective utilization of each attendee's hours – I think the formal instruction and the lab work is highly beneficial – but I believe it’s going to be a highly favored parts of the program.”
The twenty-five hundred dollar top package offers an extended personal consultation and the opportunity to lead a session for several participants plus one of the faculty members, who will then provide notes and coaching.
“The purpose is for the instructor to evaluate whatever the DM is interested in: Hey I don’t do well with improv or I get blocked in specific fight encounters. Can I run a situation for you and get feedback on my areas of proficiency and challenge?” Carl explained. “Alternatively they want to obtain critique and guidance on a definite universe that they’ve been developing.”
Future Plans
Feedback from the inaugural session will help shape subsequent DMU events. Carl mentioned that likely modifications could include expanding one-on-one sessions, extending the program to three days, or trying out different seminar structures.
“I anticipate that we host such events very often,” Carl expressed. “I would love to see several DMU sessions in a single year, in multiple places, and in various nations. The feedback has been overwhelmingly favorable. We're extremely satisfied with the results so far and I think it would be amazing to be able to conduct this in collaboration with major events.”
