Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
